A simulated underground mine from North Metropolitan TAFE will make its off-site debut at the Resources Technology Showcase exhibition this month.

Visitors to the free exhibition at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre will be able to don high-vis vests, safety glasses and complete an animated site induction before entering the mobile cut mine with a tablet and headphones.

Through augmented reality, members of the public will learn how the latest technology is being used in the resources sector, with interactive stations featuring virtual reality, drones, ground-penetrating radar, shot-firing and automation.

North Metropolitan TAFE’s director of science and resources Paula Dewhurst said the unique simulated mine had provided countless students with the real-life skills required to work in the mining sector.

Ms Dewhurst said its success in industry-targeted training had inspired TAFE to create a mobile version in a shipping container.

“In a dark, confined space, while hearing authentic underground sounds, visitors will have an unforgettable ‘underground’ experience,” she said.

Visit the Mobile CUT Mine between 9am and 4.30pm at the Resources Technology Showcase exhibition on November 27-28 at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.
