Year 9 Port Hedland Senior High School students yesterday got a glimpse of possible future careers in the resources sector while receiving some first-hand advice from Edgar Basto, BHP acting president of operations, minerals Australia.

Mr Basto said he hoped the students who had visited the Resources Technology Showcase over the past two days had fun and could see that mining was about jobs of the future, which they could get excited about.

BHP showcased its virtual reality operations at the inaugural event.

“One thing I hope we’ve achieved is to ignite a spark in all the students and as they move forward with their learning they want to be a part of our industry,” he said.

“The technology is exciting and provides a great opportunity for future careers but underpinning that is our people who are the key to making our business successful.”
