Dave Hughes has revealed he was nearly mugged in a bizarre attack as he was picking up dinner.

The radio host, known by fans as Hughesy, told fellow comedian Kate Langbroek he had ridden his bike to a takeaway shop near his home to order dinner for his family, when he realised the store he wanted to buy food from was closed.

He then got out his phone to call his wife when it was snatched out of his hand.

“I’m on the bike and I put my phone up to my ear and then all of a sudden someone grabs my phone out of my hand, just grabbed it, yes stole my phone,” he said on 2DAY FM’s Hughesy, Ed & Erin show.

“I look and it’s a man, a big man, and he is off his nut. I’m gonna say he’s a meth head.”

Describing his attacker as “crazy” Mr Hughes said the man walked away while trying to speak into the phone.

“I hadn’t actually had a chance to make the call yet...he tries to talk into the phone and he goes ‘You weren’t even talking to anyone’,” he said.

“Like it was my fault, like I was pretending to make a phone call.”

The comedian said he considered chasing the man down on his bike to try and get his phone back, before yelling out to the man to give it back.

“He’s still got the phone and then he just throws the phone on the ground...and then he’s just staggered off and basically attacked a car,” he said.

Ms Langbroek then chastised Mr Hughes for not calling the police after the incident.

“Old Cranky McCrankenstein is going to grab something off someone else,” she said.

“I know that we’re all like that’s sort of how it rolls, but when you start accepting dysfunction like that, dysfunction will rule.”
