Colin Bairstow decks the halls of his Yakamia home as Albany glows bright with festive displays

Albany is sparkling with festive colour this year, with homes and gardens covered in bright Christmas lights and decorations.

Christmas light enthusiast Colin Bairstow boasts an incredible display of decorations at his home in Yakamia.

He said he started putting up Christmas lights in the 1990s when his kids were younger and the display has been growing ever since.

“I started off with one or two strings of lights and built them up over the years,” he said.

“It became a tradition as on the first of December, I would turn the lights on and make a big thing of it.”

Not only does he put on a marvellous display, he also gets into the true festive spirit by dressing up and spreading the Christmas joy, which brought about 70 people to his home on December 1.

“I bag up 10 kilos of lollies and dress up like a nutty elf and run around the place to music,” he said.

This year’s display highlights include Father Christmas in a cement mixer, lit-up kangaroos and waves of twinkling lights.

Mr Bairstow said he loves to share the Christmas excitement with the community.

“Seeing everybody happy and seeing the smile on people’s faces is my favourite thing,” he said.

“Getting older is mandatory but growing up is optional and I’ve never grown up; I’m still a big kid.”

Mr Bairstow’s Christmas display can be seen at his home on Hayward Crest, with other impressive houses seen on Hume Corner in Yakamia.
