Great Southern Soccer Association will follow Football West and Football Federation Australia guidance as to whether they are able to have a local season in Albany this year.

Last month Football Federation Australia suspended all sanctioned grassroots football activity in Australia until May 31 because of the COVID-19 crisis.

GSSA president Marcus McPharlin said the association would not make any plans or calls on its 2020 season until further guidance from Football West or the FFA.

“Football West and the FFA will inform us if and when the temporary season suspension will be lifted based on State and Federal advice,” he said.

“Football West and FFA had been providing regular updates.

“When they feel it is safe for everyone to resume playing soccer which could still be several months away, we’ll know if we can have a 2020 season.

“The GSSA decided two weeks ago not to go ahead with our scheduled monthly delegates and executive committee meetings in line with State and Federal Government health recommendations.”

The GSSA may look at a shorter season if they are able to return to action later in the year.

“If we do resume this year the season may be shortened as cricket begins early in fourth term of school,” he said.

“The delegates and executive committee of the GSSA will keep in contact remotely and this will be an opportunity to decide if there is any possibility of a 2020 season.”

“The GSSA has and always will have the best interests of players, officials and supporters at the heart of any decision we make based on the advice from both the football bodies and government.”

Albany has a large soccer community with the GSSA last year having two men’s and two women’s senior league and cup competitions while the Albany Junior Soccer Association also runs a large winter season.
