IN PICTURES: Albany Historic Whaling Station welcomes new spotter plane exhibit

A Cessna spotter plane hangs from the Albany Historic Whaling Station as a recent addition to its permanent exhibit collection. The exhibit is the second permanent display to open at the museum in two years after Gary Tonkin’s The Art of Scrimshawing opened in May 2023. About 20 people attended the opening to view the Cessna 337 spotter plane with a 12m wingspan hanging from the ceiling of the old filtration plant shed. The spotter plane was used for whale spotting by the Cheynes Beach Whaling Company from 1967 to 1969 and was sold to the NSW Forestry Commission before it was repurchased by Albany’s Historic Whaling Station in 1990. The exhibition also features informational signs on the history of the whaling station and how whales were spotted. The exhibition opened on July 25.
