IN PICTURES: Denmark Volunteer Appreciation Sundowner

Dedicated Denmark volunteers gathered on May 18 to celebrate the best among them for a volunteer appreciation sundowner at the Denmark Recreation Centre. Seven awards for exceptional service to the Denmark community were presented at the National Volunteer Week event. Long-term firefighter Murray Brooker was crowned the citizen of the year, soccer and cricket coach Lochlan Otway was named youth citizen of the year and Louise Swan took out senior citizen of the year for her work with HorsePower and the Denmark Historical Society. The group citizen of the year was won by the Denmark Environment Centre thanks to its 35 years of environmental work. In the sporting categories, the Denmark Mountain Bike Club swept the floor, with each of the three awards won by a member of the group. Flynn Devenport, 12, claimed the junior sportsperson award, senior sportsperson was won by Karis Aplin and club president, treasurer and vice-president Allister Dickson received the service to sports award. Shire of Denmark president Kingsley Gibson praised the volunteers for their contributions, saying he was “very proud” to recognise “the diverse passions and talents that each of (the volunteers) brings to the community”.
