Stidwell nominations sought

Nominations are being called for the Mike Stidwell Medal, awarded to a dedicated sport and recreation volunteer in the Great Southern regional annually.

The Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural industries is searching for nominations for sport and recreation volunteers who make their club a better place because of the support and services they provide.

You must live in the Great Southern region to be eligible for the award or have done so within the past two years and be in a volunteer administrative role in a sport or recreation club or group.

The award honours the memory of former Department of Sport and Recreation regional manager Mike Stidwell, who made a long and selfless contribution in the region.

Mr Stidwell was regional manager of the former Great Southern Department of Sport and Recreation from 1979 to 2000.

The medal recognises outstanding contributions to sports administration and was first awarded in 2000.

Long serving volleyball member Scott Leary was last year’s winner while other recent recipients are David Wolter (2017), Tania Wolfe (2016) Kevin Shanhun (2015) and Kaye Bolger (2014).

DLGSC’s Great Southern regional manager Chris Thompson said the award is open to all volunteers, young or old.

“This award is an opportunity to recognise the fact that volunteers are the lifeblood of communities in the Great Southern,” he said.

“Without our dedicated volunteers, sport and recreation events couldn’t be run.

“We owe them so much, and this is an opportunity to shine the spotlight on their efforts.”

Award nominations close on April 30.
