Talented Great Southern duo Talon Delacey and Arthur Jones tested in State 19s trial match

Great Southern footballers Talon Delacey and Arthur Jones had the chance to impress WA selectors ahead of the national under-19s championships in a trial match at Leederville Oval on Saturday.

Forty-six of the State’s best draft prospects pushed their case for a berth in WA’s team for the national carnival in July.

Delacey hails from North Albany and Jones is a former Mt Barker player, and the pair were among a group of nine Claremont players in the match.

The pair were on opposite teams, with Delacey playing through the midfield for the black team before moving onto a wing, while Arthur was used on the wing along with in defence and up forward for the yellow team.

The black team prevailed by a goal.

“It was a great hit-out and an awesome experience, I’m very grateful for the opportunity,” Delacey said.

“It wasn’t my best game, but it was good to get my hands on the footy with some of the best talent in WA.

“Arthur looked slippery with ball in hand and wasn’t one bit out of place.”

The under-18 and under-16 age groups have been replaced by under-19 and under-17 this season to give players over east the chance to impress AFL clubs after their seasons were abandoned last year.

Meanwhile in the AFL, North Albany’s Jeremy McGovern returned from injury and was amongst the West Coast Eagles’ best in their 30-point win over Adelaide Crows at Optus Stadium on Sunday.

McGovern had 22 disposals and took 10 marks in his return from a groin injury.

Fellow North Albany product Darcy Cameron kicked a goal from 13 touches, five marks and three tackles in Collingwood’s 30-point loss to Sydney.

Railways junior Jordan Clark had 12 possessions in his return to Geelong’s side as they won by 21 points over St Kilda.
