Walmsley fire: Firefighters control and contain bushfire sparked near Chester Pass Road early Sunday morning
The bushfire threat was reduced for Albany’s northern suburbs on Monday, after a fire sparked in Walmsley in the early hours of Sunday morning was brought under control.
People bounded by Norwood Road, Lower King Road, Terry Road and Chester Pass Road were downgraded from an advice level alert at 10.35am on Monday.
The fire was brought under control and contained by 9.20am on Sunday, and the area bounded by Norwood Road, Lower King Road, Terry Road and Chester Pass Road downgraded from watch and act level at 11.30am.
Several crews of career and volunteer firefighters from the Albany, King River, Kalgan, South Coast, Napier Highway, Elleker, Torbay, Redmond and Bornholm/Kronkup brigades were dispatched to the scene on Sunday, with machinery assisting their efforts.
Waterbombers were on scene early on Sunday, before being stood down.
Firefighters are strengthening containment lines and mopping up.
Greatrex Road and Hooper Road were closed because of the blaze.
The fire was sparked at 3.18am near Chester Pass Road and Terry Road, when callers from as far away as McKail and Kalgan reported an abundance of smoke in the area.
The fire triggered a smoke alert for the central Albany area at 6.55am on Sunday.
The City of Albany was managing the blaze.
A Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson said the cause of the blaze was undetermined.
