Hawks grind out win

Saturday’s victory over the Harvey Bulls at Gloucester Park was warmly received by Augusta-Margaret River coach Matt Jamieson.

After the Bulls booted seven unanswered goals across the first half, the threat of falling to 0-3 became very real, until some class from experienced talents Harry Taylor, Brayden Smith and Mitch Payne got the Hawks home.

“It was a good grind and battle after half-time,” Jamieson said.

“We jumped out of the blocks and had a great start — probably the best we have been over the past couple of years.

“We did well around the contest in the first quarter, but then missed some opportunities in the second, which left the door ajar.”

Jamieson’s message at three-quarter-time was simple.

“You do not want to waste the opportunity to not do something in a short season,” he said.
