A local woman has shed her locks to take on more of a “G.I. Jane look” all in the name of charity.

Krisma May took part in the World’s Greatest Shave on Saturday, shaving her head to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation.

After she took part in a major rescue with the Broome Volunteer Sea Rescue, Ms May’s friends and family gathered at its headquarters to provide moral support. In the process, Ms May raised over $4,000 — more than double her $2,000 target.

After the big shave, Ms May said she felt “awesome.”

“I was a little bit nervous leading up to it but after going to a serious rescue and seeing my friends and family come down to show support, I thought ‘let’s do this’,” she said.

“I feel absolutely overwhelmed to receive so much support from my work, my friends, family and people I don’t even know.”

When Ms May announced on Facebook she was taking part in World’s Greatest Shave, she said she had always wanted to shave her head but wanted to do it for a good cause.

“I actually didn’t tell anyone I had registered to do it for a month but my husband said I needed to tell people I was doing it. On March 1, I started telling people I was doing World’s Greatest Shave and to receive that many donations in just two weeks, it’s just amazing.”
