Tigers maintain top spot on Broome Basketball ladder after narrow win over Gantheaume Pointers

In a thrilling showdown at the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre on March 20, basketball fans were treated to an intense clash between the undefeated Tigers and the formidable Gantheaume Pointers in round five of the Broome Basketball League.

From the opening tip-off, it was evident both teams were prepared to leave it all on the court.

The Tigers, sitting comfortably atop the league ladder, faced a worthy adversary in the Gantheaume Pointers.

The first quarter set the tone for a closely contested battle as the Tigers edged ahead to finish 17-16. However, the Pointers quickly retaliated, matching the Tigers basket for basket, resulting in a deadlocked score of 29-29 at half-time.

As the tension mounted in the third quarter, the Tigers managed to gain a slight advantage, courtesy of sharpshooter Jarman Cox, ending the quarter with a three-point lead, 45-42.

In the final quarter, the Tigers seemed poised to seal the victory as they extended their lead to seven points with just five minutes remaining, holding a 49-42 advantage.

Yet, the resilient Pointers launched a fierce comeback, led by stand-out performances from Tim Fogarty and Tom Schorer, narrowing the deficit to just two points with two minutes left on the clock.

However, the Tigers’ tight defence, coupled with strategic fouls from Joseph Dann and Tremaine Hart, thwarted the Pointers’ late surge.

Despite a valiant effort from the Pointers, the Tigers emerged victorious with a narrow 51-49 win, securing their fifth consecutive win of the season.

Cox proved to be the driving force behind the Tigers’ success, delivering a stand-out performance with an impressive 22 points. Meanwhile, for the Pointers, Fogarty contributed 12 points, and Schorer added 11 points to their tally.

With this hard-fought victory, the Tigers solidified their position at the top of the league table, boasting a flawless record of five wins. Meanwhile, the Pointers are in third place with three wins and two losses.

In other round five match-ups, the Peninsula Bombers soared to a convincing 54-38 win over the Drifterz, maintaining their position just behind the Tigers in the standings.

Meanwhile the Jets secured a commanding 57-32 victory over the Raiders, to be in fourth place, while the Raiders sit in fifth.

In round six, the league leaders the Tigers will face-off against the Peninsula Bombers, with the Bombers aiming to draw level at the top, should they hand the Tigers their first loss of the season.
