South Bunbury grab fifth win in a row as Harvey Bulls claim another scalp

South Bunbury fended off a spirited comeback from Dunsborough on Saturday to win 3.2 (20) to 2.2 (14) at Hands Oval to make it five wins from five games in the SWFL women’s competition. Going into the first break, the Tigers were up 2.0 (12) to nothing, but Dunsborough scored 13 points on the trot in the second quarter to take a lead of the barest of margins into half-time. No goals were scored in the third quarter and scores were tied with less than seven minutes to go in the final term. South Bunbury managed to break the deadlock with just over six minutes left on the clock by scoring a goal. The score would ultimately give them the win, finishing six points ahead. Both teams remain in the top five, but the home team are now just four points from second spot while the visitors sit two wins clear of sixth. At Brunswick Oval, Harvey Bulls beat their cross-shire rivals Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault 6.8 (44) to 1.3 (9) on Saturday, keeping their dominant season rolling on. It was a result which would have shocked few, given the Bulls’ near-perfect form so far in the SWFL women’s competition. The Bulls got things going with an unanswered 15 points in the first quarter. The lead quickly extended to 21 in the second term but Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault fought back before half-time with a goal from Arnya Pickston and three behinds to bring the margin to just two goals at the main break. From that point forward it was all one-way traffic for the Bulls, with three unanswered second-half goals to take the final margin out to 35 points. Competition-leading goal scorer Caitlin Shales bagged a pair of majors for the Bulls while Laura Cheney, Tajah Griffiths, Charlotte Panetta and Larissa Versaci all kicked a goal each. The win was the Bulls’ second of the year over their rivals after taking out the first contest 6.9 (45) to 0.2 (2) in round one. The Bulls’ place at the top of the SWFL ladder has been cemented as they sit on 48 points, eight points clear of Busselton who have a game in hand. Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault remain on 20 points, eight points away from fifth position but with a sizeable deficit in percentage. At the bottom of the table Collie Eagles forfeited their game against Eaton, the second time the current bottom-ranked side has done so this year.
