South Bunbury sends statements with big wins in men’s and women’s matches

South Bunbury Football Club made a statement at the weekend with their men’s and women’s sides bagging two big wins as the season enters it’s final third before finals. The Tigers men continued their dominant unbeaten run finishing comfortable victors over bottom-placed Collie, 14.13 (97) to 3.3 (21) at Collie Rec Ground on Sunday. South Bunbury started strongly and never looked back, taking the first quarter by 15 points. The visitors extended their lead at every break limiting Collie to just eight points at three quarter time. While the hosts managed to kick two goals in the final term, it only reduced the margin to 76 points. In the women’s game the margin was the same, with South Bunbury taking out the match 11.10 (76) to Collie’s 0.0 (0). South Bunbury got off to a strong start with 30 points bagged by quarter time but neither team scored in the second quarter. After half-time rolled around, South Bunbury picked the scoring up again, booting five goals for the quarter and another two in the fourth, all while keeping Collie scoreless. The result leaves South Bunbury fourth on the ladder, equal with Bunbury on 40 points but down on percentage, while Collie remain in last place. On Sunday, the Donnybrook men dominated their affair over Dunsborough 13.12 (90) to 2.1 (13) at Dunsborough Playing Fields. The visitors scored the first four goals before Dunsborough kicked a goal of their own. Dunsborough was kept scoreless in the second quarter as the visitors added two goals to their total giving them a 40-point lead at half time. It took until late in the third quarter for the hosts to get another major, but by that time Donnybrook had scored three more goals. The fourth quarter was another scoreless one for Dunsborough as their opposition pushed the margin to 77 at full time. The women’s fixture between the sides was a low scoring game with Donnybrook scoring a late goal to take out a 3.2 (20) to 2.5 (17) win. While the visitors failed to score a goal in the first quarter a goal in each of the remaining quarters – two from the boot of Courtney Zappara – was enough to get them over the line with Dunsborough’s inaccuracy costing them in the end. At Harvey Oval, the Harvey Bulls men broke a torrid run of form with a gutsy 7.10 (52) to 6.6 (42) point win over Eaton on Sunday. While Eaton then scored the last goal it was too little too late for the visitors who finished 10 points adrift. The Harvey women put up another dominant display as they strolled past Eaton 10.15 (75) to 1.0 (6). The home side got off to a fast start, scoring the first three goals and five behinds of the game before the Boomers responded with the last score of the quarter by Courtney Collard to put the margin at 17. The goal would be the only score Eaton could muster for the game as the Bulls flexed their muscles with another three goals in the second quarter to take a 38-point lead into the main break. There was no stopping the momentum after half time as Harvey kicked another three goals and one more in the fourth to finish the game 69-point victors. The win leaves the Bulls at the table’s summit on 52 points while Eaton are eighth.
