SWFL: Harvey Bulls’ Trinity Brown edges out Busselton’s Katie-Jayne Grieve to claim Nola Marino Medal

Harvey Bulls star Trinity Brown edged out Busselton’s Katie-Jayne Grieve to win the Nola Marino Medal in a thrilling count on Friday night. The Magpies’ bye in the final round of the season left Grieve, who was attempting to become the second two-time winner of the award alongside Donnybrook’s Jess Verbrugge, stuck on 25 votes, two ahead of Brown on 23. The powerful Bulls midfielder did what she had to do to take sole ownership of the Medal, polling the maximum three votes in her side’s victory over Dunsborough. Brown’s teammate Rachel Wright recorded 23 votes to finish third, ahead of Dunsborough’s Shelby Foster (19 votes) and Bunbury’s Kloe Bassett (17). Brown made the early running in the count, leading all comers with 11 votes after six rounds, while Grieve had polled only five in something of a surprise. But by round 16, there was a tie at the top of the leaderboard, with the pair each on 22 votes. Grieve had made her move with a strong back end of the year, producing three-vote performances in five of her final eight games. Brown continued to receive regular votes as the count reached a climax but was regularly deprived of the chance to claim maximum votes by her fellow Bull Wright, who had four three-vote games in the final six rounds of the season. Brown said winning the award was an “awesome privilege”. “Obviously I started at the Boomers, so thanks to them for the foundation of my footy,” she said. “Being at Harvey and being part of a side that always makes finals obviously made me step up that bit more.” Brown also paid tribute to both Wright and Marino, a former club president of the Bulls and long-time patron of women’s football in the region. “Sheppy, she’s such an inspirational captain, she leads by example every game,” she said. “Especially with Nola being heavily involved in the club that I play at, I’m privileged to have this.” Brown is the second winner of the award from the Bulls, joining the team’s current assistant coach Fleur Parker, who claimed the competition’s top honour in 2019. Surprisingly, Grieve was the only Magpie in the top 18 vote-getters, with Isabella Hancock, who polled seven votes to tie for 19th, their next most prominent player in the count. South Bunbury had four players — Megan Bain, Zoe Huggett (both 13 votes), Georgia Kowald and Kiarni Stevens (both 11) — finish with double-digit vote tallies, while Bunbury had three in Bassett, Melinda Bobby (16) and Sarina Tassone (11).
