Two humpbacks gave locals and visitors a whale of a time on Saturday when they swam alongside the Busselton Jetty, stopping by for photos and videos.

Spectators reported the whales floated for “a while” in the depths of Geographe Bay, and said at times they had even been “close enough to touch”.

From June to early December each year, an estimated 35,000 whales, including humpback, southern right, minke and blue whales, migrate from Antarctica to the warm South West waters. After June, humpback whales head directly up north for the pregnant females to give birth, before returning to rest in Geographe Bay from September.

Footage of the recent encounter can be found on the Busselton Jetty’s Facebook page at facebook.com/busseltonjetty.
