UPDATE: Metropolitan Perth and the Peel region will go into a three-day lockdown from midnight on Friday after a hotel quarantine outbreak led to community transmission.

WA Premier Mark McGowan made the announcement this afternoon after a man who contracted the virus in Perth hotel quarantine flew to Melbourne.

The Victorian man tested positive to COVID-19 after contracting the virus at the Mercure Hotel in Perth, which was this week linked to transmission of the UK variant of the virus between guests staying on the sixth floor.

After two weeks in quarantine he flew into Melbourne on Wednesday night. On arrival in Melbourne he was told to immediately self isolate and get tested because his hotel room in Perth was adjacent to a positive case.

His positive test result was returned at 2am on Friday morning, ending Victoria’s run of zero local transmission.

It comes after a British nurse who is pregnant and asthmatic and her four-year-old daughter contracted COVID-19 from another guest while at the Mercure Hotel Perth.
