Police have charged a 36-year-old man over sexually explicit conversations he had with a young girl online earlier this year.

Detectives will allege the man used a social media application in August to become friends with a young girl.

During subsequent conversations he made sexual overtures and sent images of a sexual nature.

It is further alleged between October and November the man made contact via a social media chat application with a person he believed was a 14-year-old girl.

He is then alleged to have sent the girl images of a sexual nature and made sexual comments during conversations.

On November 21 the man arranged to meet the 14-year-old at the Cockburn train station.

He was arrested by officers from the Western Australia Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team.

The 36-year-old man from Hammond Park has been charged with over 20 offences including 17 counts of intent to procure a person believed to be under 16 to engage in sexual activity and six counts of intent to expose a person believed to be under 16 to indecent matter.

He is due to face Fremantle Magistrate's Court on Friday.
