City Scenes: Picture of the week shows cotton candy sunset overlooking Geraldton Port

The Port of Geraldton has been servicing the Mid West since 1840 when the HMS Champion was the first of many boats to arrive on the coast.

Almost 200 years later, the port and the city surrounding it is thriving. Not only is the the busy port the city’s most important economic asset, it’s also a pretty stunning backdrop for some aerial photos, especially when nature delivers one of her unbelievable sunsets.

Well-known Geraldton photographer Travis Petford captures stunning landscapes — both land and sea — and the surrounding islands off the coast.

This photo was taken when he was flying a drone for the first time. Anyone that knows Petford’s work, would be aware he’s obsessed with sunsets.

“I stayed around and captured the sunset, the conditions were perfect — no wind, no swell — just perfect weather,” he said.

Petford said he has spent time working in photography on the Abrolhos Islands, and was invited to a whale charter this week.

Capturing the magic of the Mid West and having great camera skills brings opportunities to see some of the most beautiful places in the world, all for the sake of work. What’s not to love about photography?
