Geraldton woman rescued from wreckage of car crash on Foreshore Drive

A 65-year-old Geraldton woman has escaped a serious crash with minor injuries after she flipped a car onto its roof in the Geraldton CBD on Wednesday afternoon.

The woman was driving a blue Hyundai along Foreshore Drive near Dome Cafe when the car clipped the back of a van and smashed into a bollard.

Police believe the woman possibly suffered a medical episode as she made a right turn out of the car park near Wonder Bake.

Acting Traffic Sgt Keith Burrows said CCTV footage showed the 65-year-old was driving “erratically” before the blue Hyundai crashed.

Sgt Burrows said the woman had to be rescued from the wreckage by emergency services even though she wasn’t trapped.

“She’s bruised and battered but no obvious cuts or fractures,” he said.

A St Johns Ambulance spokesperson said the woman was taken to Geraldton Regional Hospital at about 1.45pm with minor injuries.

The male driver of the van, who didn’t travel to hospital by ambulance, was nursing a sore arm at the scene.

A tradie who witnessed the crash said he heard tyres screeching.

“She accelerated quite fast and bumped the van in the back and hit that bollard right in front and the car ran up on its nose and flipped on its back,” he said.

“She must have slipped or something.

“The guy in the van seemed in a bit of shock. He was holding his
