WA Water Police have deployed a Mid West Ports Authority vessel to retrieve a yachtsman whose motorised vessel broke down off the Abrolhos Islands.

The rescue vessel is en route to collect the yachtsman and it is understood a decision will be made as to whether to tow the yacht back to shore.

A WA Police spokeswoman said the yacht was understood to be quite large, but was at anchor and believed to be in no immediate danger.

It is believed the yachtsman contacted emergency services yesterday after his yacht broke down, but initially did not want to leave the vessel, and made contact again today.

Geraldton Volunteer Marine Rescue Group could not be deployed due to Australian Maritime and Safety Authority weather and weight restrictions.
