A tiger shark has been spotted off Geraldton’s foreshore — seen circling outside Dome cafe — prompting a warning from local police to beachgoers not to enter the water.

According to the SharkSmart WA website, a member of the public reported seeing a 3m tiger shark about 400m offshore from Geraldton’s front beach about 11.30am on Tuesday.

In a social media post, the Mid West Gascoyne Police District said the shark had been sighted between Dome cafe and the Surf Life Saving Club. They ended their post with a warning: “Do Not Enter the Water.”

People responded to the post, saying there were still more than 50 people in the water including those taking swimming lessons.

Around 12.30pm, police officers were patrolling the area asking people to leave the water. At that time the Geraldton Guardian could see two jetskis, several boats and up to half a dozen swimmers still in the water in the general area.

City of Greater Geraldton rangers were called to the scene at 1pm but could not substantiate the sighting.

“City Officers stayed in the area for up to 30 minutes and there was no further sightings,” City chief executiveRoss McKim said.

He said the beach was not officially closed to the public.
