Katanning Landcare recognised for more than 30 years of environmental community service

Katanning Landcare has been recognised for its commitment to preserving the Great Southern’s environment with one of WA’s top landcare honours.

The Katanning group received the landcare community group award at last month’s WA Landcare Awards for more than 30 years of serving the community and improving the environment for future generations.

In the time Katanning Landcare has been in operation, volunteers and workers have fenced off 10,000sqkm to protect remnant vegetation and environmentally sensitive flora and fauna.

They have also planted more than a million trees and secured more than $10m for community projects.

Katanning Landcare’s Andrea Salmond said it was “wonderful and surprising” to be recognised.

“This recognition is really rewarding for all the years of voluntary work and that from private landowners who have invested their time into improving the environment,” she said.

WA Landcare Network chairman Mick Davis extended a “huge” congratulations to the winners.

“We’re seeing real and substantial outcomes from the dedication and commitment of community landcarers,” he said.

“It’s critical that we continue to support and recognise their tremendous efforts.”
