The community of Tambellup joined forces to raise $1500 for Breast Cancer Care WA after a successful Purple Bra Day fundraiser.

Dozens donned purple bras as they gathered at the Tambellup CRC on Friday to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer support networks.

Cancer Council’s Bruce Beamish and McGrath Foundation nurse Claire Bodlovic also attended the event to shed light on support networks available to sufferers and their families in regional and remote areas.

Ms Bodlovic said Tambellup’s commitment to cancer detection and prevention serves as a model for other towns to aspire towards.

“I have seen a rise in groups, such as the Tambellup community, who are really pushing the message of growing awareness and participating in health care which is key to promoting our purpose throughout the regions,” she said.

“It’s really important, particularly in remote areas, that people know they have access to support networks such as the McGrath Foundation or Cancer Council.

“We can provide assistance with travel or accommodation and organising appointments to ensure people are getting their required care as soon as possible.”

Ms Bodlovic also conducted a breast cancer self-check briefing to educate attendees on proper self-examination techniques.

“It’s extremely important for everyone to be aware of their own bodies, their own health and identifying things early,” Ms Bodlovic said.

“Early identification is vital to preventing the spread of breast cancer.

“It’s important for them to know where they need to go and get help as soon as they detect anything that isn’t normal for them.”

The Tambellup Hotel hung a huge purple bra from the balcony of the building in support of the day’s festivities and St John’s Tambellup were voted best looking bra.
