Brunswick Pool cleared of potentially deadly Naegleria fowleri after additional water quality testing

The Brunswick Junction swimming spot at the centre of public health concerns has been cleared of a potential deadly amoeba. Further water quality testing of Brunswick Pool failed to detect any further presence of Naegleria fowleri, the Shire of Harvey confirmed on Wednesday. The identification of the brain-eating amoeba earlier this month prompted warnings from authorities to not swim in the waterway as it can cause a rare but fatal infection known as amoebic meningitis. Shire of Waroona officers had their own scare with Naegleria fowleri after amoebas of the same family were found in the water at Drakesbrook Weir earlier this month. Additional testing ultimately determined the irrigation reservoir did not have the organism within its waters. In announcing the good news, the Shire of Harvey encouraged community members to try and prevent water from going up their nose when swimming in freshwater, which is a significant factor in potential infection. The council thanked the community for following previous requests to not swim in the pool.
