Excitement builds at Brunswick Tennis Club after receiving State Government funding to replace tennis courts

A Brunswick Junction sporting club is one step closer to a much-needed infrastructure upgrade.

The Brunswick Tennis Club will begin a highly anticipated court upgrade later this year after receiving a $53,000 grant from the State Government’s Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund.

President Julianne Hill said the club was “so excited” to have received the funding.

“We need to (improve) these courts and I think kids will be rapt — they will be so excited,” she said.

The courts at the club last received an upgrade about a decade ago when plastic tiles were laid on top of the existing “really degraded” surface.

But the tiles are now deteriorating and becoming a trip hazard for players.

“At the time, it was the best service but this upgrade will do the job properly and we think this will last and we’re really happy about that,” Ms Hill said.

“It just revamps the whole club and gets the (excitement) growing again.”

The upgrades will remove both the floor tiles and the bitumen surface underneath. The ground will be repacked, the sand replenished, and the new surface applied.

The CSRFF funding is the culmination of three years of work between the club and the Shire of Harvey, with the Shire also committing $50,000 to the project.

Brunswick Tennis Club has also received $30,000 in funding from Albemarle and $5000 from Qube.

Ms Hill noted the upgrades would ensure the club could continue offering a supportive environment for some of the sport’s rising stars.

“We’ve got some really promising kids coming through,” she said.

“We know that they’re not going to stay here forever (but) if we can get them to love the game here and get them to a certain level, we know they are on the right path.”

The club hopes the works will start in mid to late-November and be completed by mid-February.

Junior registrations for the club’s coming season will start on September 19, with the court action beginning on October 17.
