Young actors, performers and artistically-minded young people are being called on to take part in a new film project in the Shire of Harvey.

Young people aged between 13 to 25 who are interested in the performing arts can apply to take part in Walk With Me – Harvey, a project aimed at linking young creatives with performing-arts industry professionals to create and perform an original piece based on our local area.

The performers will create, script and perform the piece themselves with help from the Riptide Youth Performance Company and Art On The Move at the Harvey Recreation and Cultural Centre.

The program will run from August 28 through to September 1 and the finished product will be launched at a community event at the Harvey Amphitheatre.

Centre manager David Marshall said the program had the potential for long-term value within the Harvey community.

“Often we will see someone who is quite sporty and aspirational wanting to become an AFL footballer, and there are natural, local pathways they can follow to get there,” Mr Marshall said.

“Unfortunately that isn’t always the case with creatives and performance.

“I think this program will provide a way of allowing those young people who may be interested in the performing arts to express themselves to the local community while also putting them in contact with some really well connected people in the WA performing arts space.

“You could be the most experienced performing arts young person in Harvey or the most inexperienced, either way we would love you to come on board.”

Mr Marshall said the program was part of a bigger project to help develop a connection between the recreational centre and the cultural centre.

“We are finding that with the more shows being put on and programs we are running through the centre, the balance between both parts of the centre is evening out.”
