Free breast screening for cancer will soon be available to Waroona women over 40 when Breastscreen WA’s mobile clinic comes to town.

One in seven women is likely to develop breast cancer in their lifetime, something the mobile clinic hopes to catch in the initial stages.

From May 1 to 17, the mobile clinic is offering women a free mammogram.

Breastscreen WA’s medical director Dr Elizabeth Wylie said a mammogram is one of the best things women could do to look after their health.

She said the 20-minute procedure could save lives, with mammograms able to detect 70-90 per cent of breast cancers.

“Screening every two years is vitally important to increase the chance of a breast cancer being detected when it is too small to feel or be noticed,” Dr Wylie said.

“Finding a cancer at this early stage often means that the breast cancer is small and more treatable.”

With more than 75 per cent of breast cancer affecting women over the age of 50, screening is an effective tool in early detection and prevention.

The mobile screening clinic will be parked at the Waroona Community Resource Centre at 10 Henning Street.

Appointments are required, so to book a free mammogram head to www.breastscreen.health.wa.gov.au or call 13 20 50.
