Young adventurers in the Shire of Harvey have a chance to set sail on Australia’s largest sail-training ship, the STS Leeuwin II.

Harvey residents aged 15 to 25 with an interest in adventure are encouraged to apply for a scholarship through the Shire of Harvey to take part in the Youth Explorer Voyage onboard the iconic sailing vessel.

Each year, the council, along with the Rotary Club of Harvey, Australind Lions Club, Brunswick Junction Lions Club and Harvey Lions Club, jointly support several aspiring sailors to take part in a voyage.

The voyage sets sail from Fremantle on August 31, heading out into the open waters of the Indian Ocean for six nights and seven days before returning on September 6.

The scholarship covers $2300 of the voyage’s $2700 cost, so successful applicants will need to contribute the remaining $400.

Shire president Michelle Campbell said the voyages were an excellent way to explore water safety, learn sailing skills, make new friends and build resilience away from home.

“Leeuwin scholarships are the legacy of former councillor Paul Beech, who retired in 2023 after 12 years on council,” she said.

“Mr Beech was a fierce supporter of creating opportunities for young people in the Harvey region and I’m thrilled the shire continues to deliver the program he championed.”

Ms Campbell said the returning sailors would deliver a presentation to the council about their adventures at sea.

“I am pleased to say the feedback is always positive,” she said.

“Some former participants have had so much fun, they’ve returned to the STS Leeuwin II as volunteers.

“I know interest has been high again this year and I’m excited to hear all the great stories to come.”

Applications for the Shire of Harvey’s Leeuwin scholarships close on June 14.
