An Our Lady of Mercy College school teacher has lost his mop for a good cause.

David Mazza shaved his hair to raise awareness for breast cancer and raised more than $600 for research into the disease. “It is something that is close to my heart at the moment and by raising awareness, I can help other people,” Mr Mazza said.

The courageous school teacher had been growing his hair since 2018, after he moved to the remote community of Beagle Bay.

He continued to grow his locks while at his new Australind school.

He shaved his head in front of all the students last month, which also happened to be Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

School counsellor Vikki Merritt had the honours of shaving his luscious locks.

A representative from the school said the brave act encompassed the college’s values of courage and compassion.
