Harvey Senior High School students win top spot at CinefestOZ Cinesnaps Short Film contest for film Treasure

Budding young filmmakers from Harvey Senior High School had their names in lights last week when they won top spot at the CinefestOZ Cinesnaps Short Film contest. The red-carpet event showcased a total of eight films, split into two categories, produced by young creatives from the South West and Great Southern regions Following the theme of Treasure, HSHS’s four-minute short film Treasure was first in the Year 7-9 category. Student Neve Mullinger said the competition had ignited her filmmaking passion. “My sister took it up when she was younger and she was good at it, so I thought I’d be like her, and I’ve always enjoyed media,” she said. “Next year we are going to do another one for Cinesnaps, for the older category.” Australian actor Joel Jackson, who was chair of this year’s Cinesnaps jury, said he was excited to see what next year’s festival would bring as students and teachers continued to raise the bar. “Regardless of the outcome, each of the stories told by these kids is important,” he said. “Each of their stories matter and what they are doing is telling a part of their community and that’s fantastic.” Other students in the winning HSHS group were Jorja Plant, Chloe Basten, Brooklyn Kiddie, Ty Guretti and Liam Thomas. Cape Naturaliste College students Aiden Gillett and Jake Holland, part of the Year 10-12 category, also walked away with a win for their short film, Treasure Heist.
