A South West apprentice has pulled off a major feat, being recognised as the best in the State. Campbell Italiano was awarded the title of 2022 Apprentice of the Year at the Apprentice Employment Network WA Awards for Excellence held in Perth late last month. Mr Italiano said he was pleased with the result. “It is an award for around the whole State with group training so I’m pretty happy about it,” he said. The Harvey young gun is completing his Certificate III in Electrotechnology – Electrician through the Apprentice and Traineeship Company. For Mr Italiano, the electrical path was a natural step. “My dad, my brother and other family relatives are sparkies so I have kind of been around the trade,” he said. “It is just a great trade to be in because there are so many different options you can take — industrial, commercial and residential.” “You’re always learning on the job and you’re going out and meeting new people every day.” Mr Italiano took out the gong against five other apprentices from MPA Skills, Electrical Group Training, WPC Group and MEGT. Apprentice and Traineeship Company chief executive Stan Liaros said Mr Italiano should be “very proud” of his achievement. “He is a really fine young man and I think generally the region should be very happy to have a young fella like that coming from the South West and achieving what he has achieved,” he said. The future is looking bright for Mr Italiano, with the up and coming tradie hoping to one day start his own business. As for what advice he would give those considering an apprenticeship, his response is simple. “Definitely give a few trades a go like plumbing or chippie, and when you do go out act very keen and like you want to be there,” Mr Italiano said.
