Nationals MLC James Hayward has taken aim at the State Government’s “appalling” vaccine rollout in the shire of Harvey. It comes after statistics showed only 28.6 per cent of the shire’s population were fully vaccinated against COVID-19, with surrounding local government areas, such as Waroona, even lower. Mr Hayward, pictured, said the rates should be much higher this far into the vaccination program. “Having low vaccine rates and a struggling health system will be limiting factors for WA to eventually transition to greater freedoms,” he said. “Fixing the slow uptake of the COVID-19 jab is simple and should be urgently prioritised.” Mr Hayward said the vaccination rates were appalling, and alternatives needed to be considered to ensure every West Australian had access to the vaccine. “The Labor Government should consider implementing measures like targeted pop-up clinics in rural and remote areas to quickly boost accessibility and uptake of the vaccine,” he said. Mr Hayward said while the Opposition had made suggestions to set up walk-in clinics at major regional events, the McGowan Government continued to drag its heels in making it happen. “We know West Australians want to roll up their sleeves and get the job done, but that is difficult to do when we have regional clinics that are only open a few times a week,” he said.
