A unique photography competition which aims to bring life to the Harvey community is running in 2024 called Unusual Places to Read.

The competition has been running for more than a decade alongside other photography competitions such as pet photo and nature photo contests.

Harvey Library projects manager Ruth Campbell-Hicks said the initiative was part of the annual school holiday programs held by the library and asked entrants to find an unusual place to read and be imaginative about capturing themselves, a family member or a friend in a photo.

“Library staff like to encourage creativity and having fun, and since every family has a mobile phone with photo facility, photo competitions are an accessible way of including as many people as possible. Getting involved and having a go are highly valued,” she said.

Entries will be judged in age categories up to 16, and then in one adult category for over 16s.

First place and runner-up in each category will receive a prize and all entrants will receive a certificate.

Dr Campbell-Hicks said people who were non-users of libraries were particularly encouraged to visit their local library to find out what activities and services were on offer.

“I love to see people of all ages, especially children and teenagers, taking part in community activities. Libraries support lifelong learning and this is just one of the many ways in which learning occurs,” she said.

The community can submit entries up until January 30 and winners will be announced by February 2.

To enter you can find an unusual and safe place to read your favourite book, take an original and creative photo of yourself, a family member or a friend and submit to the library.

The image can be emailed to hstaff@harvey.wa.gov.au or submitted to the library as an A4 colour print.

Entries must include the participant’s name, phone number and age.
