Renewed partnership between EdConnect and Alcoa Foundation sees mentorships in 19 schools across the regions

Generational gaps are closing across the regions as a volunteer-based program connecting students with adult mentors reaches 19 schools throughout the South West. A renewed partnership between mentor-based volunteer program EdConnect and Alcoa Foundation saw the organisation receive more than $245,000 for its Connecting Generations for School Success Program. The program aims to provide academic support to students by connecting them with older mentors as well as offering mentors the opportunity to remain active and connected to their community. EdConnect CEO Gerri Clay said the organisation was excited to celebrate the renewed partnership and proud of the quality of EdConnect volunteers. The partnership aims to match volunteers with 800 students — who need social, emotional and academic support — across schools in the Peel and South West regions. Volunteers who take part in the program can nominate themselves as either mentors, ensuring at-risk students achieve their academic potential, or learning support volunteers who assist teachers and students in the classroom. EdConnect are currently seeking more volunteers in the South West and operate at 19 schools from Australind to Augusta.
