School pays its respect to Anzacs

STUDENTS, teachers, family and community members gathered at Brunswick Junction Primary School on Wednesday for a commemorative Anzac service.

Student councillors Amity Bremmell and Connor Obal led the service, with the Welcome to Country performed by Gregory Williams, Acel Turner and Anne-Marie Williams.

Australian Light Horse Association representative and vice president of the Bunbury troop, Harry Ball, was guest speaker for the event.

Mr Ball spoke of the messages the students could learn from the Anzacs and returned servicemen.

He said it was important for students “to become part of the community in order to make changes” in the world around them.

The school choir sang a spritely rendition of Pack up Your Troubles, accompanied by Shani Katani on piano.

Representatives from community groups then placed wreaths at the foot of the Australian flag, including the Brunswick unit of the Red Cross and the town’s Community Resource Centre.

Murray-Wellington MLA Robyn Clarke also laid a wreath and paid her respects to the Anzacs.

Retired Brunswick teacher and ex-serviceman Roy Hansen read the ode to the assembly, followed by a moving performance of The Last Post by Australind Senior High School student Bayden Adams.
