The Shire of Harvey at its last ordinary council meeting voted to endorse a plan to protect one of the South West’s most significant water bodies.

The coastline from Capel to the Leschenault peninsula is the focus of the shire’s new coastal hazard risk management and adaptation plan.

The Shire of Harvey will use the CHRMAP to guide management of the Leschenault Estuary and the northern sections of the Collie River, mitigating risks of shoreline erosion and flooding from rainfall and coastal inundation from storm surges.

Development on the plan started in mid-2020 in partnership with the shires of Capel and Dardanup, the City of Bunbury, Southern Ports Authority and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions outlining how councils will deal with inland waterway hazards across the catchment area.

The development of the CHRMAP included community consultation to ensure residents were aware of the issues and were involved in decision-making for the coast.
