A project to improve the recycling of electronic waste is set to start in the Shire of Waroona this month. An e-waste recovery initiative is expected to begin at the Buller Road Refuse Disposal Site before the end of November after the council received State Government funding to assist in its development. The Shire of Waroona received a $17,000 WasteSorted E-Waste Infrastructure Grant from the Waste Authority earlier this year to build a structure at the site. The structure will be used to store unusable or unwanted electronic items before they are sent away for further processing. It comes as the State Government seeks to ban the disposal of electronic waste in landfills next year. The disposal ban will include mobile phones, televisions, computers and screens, alongside batteries, white goods, medical equipment and lighting. Environment Minister Reece Whitby said the ban was a step in the right direction towards a circular economy. “Banning e-waste disposal to landfill means we can recover valuable materials that would otherwise be lost, and in the process, build local industries as well as protect the environment,” he said.
