Quambie Park residents once again rolled up their sleeves on Wednesday for the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

A specialist team from Aspen Medical Group administered the Pfizer vaccine to 36 of the facility’s residents and 16 staff.

The jab was administered two days after the WA Government ramped up its COVID-19 vaccination campaign by opening up doses to the over 50s.

Quambie Park’s independent living coordinator Candace Jones, who also received her second dose, said vaccination was the best way to prevent the virus, or at least to reduce the more negative effects.

She said none of those who received the jab had reported any side effects.

“I feel absolutely fine,” Ms Jones said.

“After the first dose I had a dead arm, similar to when you have the tetanus shot, but I’ve had nothing at all this time.”

Like in all aged care facilities in WA, the flu vaccination is mandatory for all staff and visitors, but the COVID jab remains voluntary.

Residents at Quambie Park received their first dose one month ago, before the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation recommended AstraZeneca as the preferred COVID-19 vaccine for people aged 50 years and over.

At the end of last week more than 100,000 aged and disability care residents around Australia had received both doses of either the Pfizer or Astra-Zenica vaccine.

More than 2,554,000 total doses had been administered nationwide.
