SWFL: Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault lose first match of season to Carey Park

Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault’s 23-point loss to Carey Park on Saturday night was their first of this South West Football League season. The Lions had opened the season in impressive fashion with five straight wins but were left stunned by a second-half blitz from the Panthers, who ran out 11.7 (73) to 7.8 (50) winners at Kelly Park. Derek Hall’s side headed into half-time with a one-point lead but the Panthers booted five goals while holding the visitors to only two behinds in a brilliant third quarter. Kayden Pannetta slotted his second goal in the opening stages of the final term to give the Lions some hope but there was to be no comeback. Earlier in the day, the women’s side continued a good patch of recent form with a 73-point win over the Panthers. The Lions backed up a strong display against reigning premiers Bunbury last weekend by showing no mercy to the ninth-placed Panthers, holding them goalless in the 11.9 (75) to 0.2 (2) victory. Claire Edwards (three goals), Maddison Flanagan, Shelby Humphries and Zoe Roberts (all two goals) contributed multiple majors in the win, while vice-captain Latisha Hough continued a brilliant season with another best-afield display.
