WA College of Agriculture - Harvey receives guest visit from winners of reality TV show The Summit
Students at a Harvey school have heard stories of overcoming adversity after receiving a visit from two reality TV show winners.
WA College of Agriculture - Harvey received a special visit earlier this month from Lulu Hawton and Brooke Kilowsky, who were both contestants on The Summit which aired earlier this year.
Ms Kilowsky said the talk came about after the pair were asked to share their life journeys and stories at other schools following their competition win, which involved 14 days of hiking the Southern Alps in New Zealand.
“We had such a fabulous response that we decided we want to speak to as many teens as possible, and most importantly, teens out in remote areas,” she said.
“We believe these years are just so important leading into adulthood and we want rural teens to have the same opportunities as the kids in metropolitan areas.”
While Ms Hawton lives in WA, Ms Kilowsky flew in from Adelaide specifically for the presentation.
They shared their stories with students, with the pair following different life paths.
Ms Hawton is a two-time world boxing champion and has previously represented Australia in skateboarding, while Ms Kilowsky is a psychology student after picking up studying the field later in life.
Ms Kilowsky said the duo shared their stories of adversity through their lives, and discussed resilience, bullying and having grit and determination.
“We talked about all the times we felt we had failed in life but never gave up,” she said.
“We embrace failure because in the end we have accomplished so much because of it — never giving up is the key to success.”
Ms Kilowsky said they wanted students to learn from their experiences and be inspired to be the best versions of themselves.
“We are hoping that our stories touch the students and that it inspired them to never give up,” she said.
“We wanted to show the importance of mental strength and we can all rise from adversity.”
The pair have previously delivered talks at Sevenoaks Senior College and Yule Brook College in Perth.
