Wallam Watch: Harvey product endures unhappy homecoming in big loss to West Coast Fever

Harvey product Donnell Wallam endured an unhappy homecoming on Friday night at RAC Arena, with her Queensland Firebirds suffering a 36-point thrashing at the hands of West Coast Fever. Wallam — a nominee for the South Western Times’ AJ ‘Tood’ Buswell Sports Star of the Year award — produced another strong performance in her own State, nailing five super shots in a 47-point effort, but the Firebirds were never in the game against the unbeaten Fever, going down 94-58. The hosts started the contest in red-hot fashion, opening up a 10-point quarter-time lead and extending their advantage out to 21 points at the main break. With her side starting to get some flow in their ball movement after the interval, Wallam began to get going in a strong third-term effort but the Fever did not relent, extending their lead by another 15 goals in the second half. The loss leaves the Firebirds with a win-loss record of 1-4 and in sixth position on the eight-team competition’s ladder, ahead of Melbourne Mavericks and Giants Netball on percentage. Their next assignment will come at home against the fledgling Mavericks on Sunday, with the game at Nissan Arena getting underway at 12pm WA time.
