Despite the Queensland Firebirds once again falling just short of recording their first win of the season, a run of super shots has helped Harvey’s Donnell Wallam continue shining on the netball court. Wallam and the Firebirds hosted reigning premiers West Coast Fever at Nissan Arena during the fifth round of the 2023 Super Netball season in an exciting contest. Although the Fever managed to capitalise on unforced mid-court errors by the Firebirds, Wallam stepped up in the goal circle to sink a couple of crucial super shots to keep the margin low. Keen to build momentum, the Firebirds made a strong start to the second quarter, with Mia Stower making impressive feeds into the goal circle to Wallam. Wallam soon found herself up against Rudi Ellis, who contested strong in the air. Despite Wallam capitalising on a few defensive rebounds to give the Firebirds a chance to fight back during the second half, making several more super shots in the process. Although they finished the third quarter strong, the Firebirds were unable to keep that momentum going as Fever scored two straight goals early in the final term. Every Fever ball was contested by the Firebirds as their home crowd willed their team on but as the final power five began, the Firebirds had no choice but to shoot out the match. While a fired up Wallam kept her team in the fight with three consecutive super shots, the Firebirds fell just short to the undefeated Fever 73-71. Wallam finished with 48 goals from 53 attempts, seven super shots and three rebounds.
