A Peel council will have only six serving councillors for the next year after one suddenly resigned.

Dion Pisconeri resigned from the Shire of Waroona on October 21, three years into his four-year term.

Council documents state his resignation from the shire was due to business commitments not allowing time for the position.

Shire president Mike Walmsley said said it was unfortunate to see Mr Pisconeri depart, but he understood the importance of devoting time to his own business.

“I’m very sad to see him go,” he said.

“He’s a young man with a young family in town, so it’s lovely to see those sorts of councillors as part of a council to set direction for what he wants his children to see.”

Mr Pisconeri was elected to the council in late 2021 and had a year left of his term before he faced re-election.

Cr Walmsley said his departure had its impacts on the council, reducing numbers down to six.

“It puts a bit more onus on the councillors that are left, but we’ve got some really high calibre councillors so I’m sure that we’ll spread the load and do what we need to do,” he said.

Cr Walmsley said running an extraordinary election to fill Mr Dion’s position would likely cost about $28,000, which with the next council elections taking place in 2025, would be a significant cost to the shire.

“We’ll just battle on with six and next year, we will be back to seven councillors,” he said.

Mr Pisconeri was contacted for comment.
