A former NSW psychologist has been charged with raping a 15-year-old patient in 2017 and will remain behind bars.

Craig Myles Baker allegedly sexually assaulted the boy during specialist appointments on the state's mid-north coast.

NSW Police on Thursday attended a prison in Kempsey and arrested 55-year-old Baker, charging him with indecently assaulting a person under 16 and aggravated sexual intercourse with a person aged between 14 and 16.

Police will allege in court the former clinical psychologist sexually assaulted the boy - then 15 - between April and May 2017.

Baker appeared at Coffs Harbour Local Court on Friday and declined to apply for bail, which was formally refused by magistrate Ian Rodgers.
