It is too soon to say what restrictions England will face once its coronavirus lockdown ends next month but it will not be going back to normal, health officials say.

Stephen Powis, the medical director of England's NHS health service, said the government would be lifting the current restrictions on December 2 but added: "I am sure we will not be going back to normal - further restrictions will be required."

The UK recorded a further 511 deaths within 28 days of a positive COVID-19 test on Friday, the health minister Matt Hancock said, up from 501 a day earlier.

There were 22,287 people who tested positive for COVID-19 in the latest daily figures, down from 22,915 cases recorded on Thursday.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said on Friday t hat the number of COVID-19 infections in England appears to have levelled off in recent weeks.

The ONS said daily coronavirus infections in England rose by an estimated 38,900 in the most recent week to November 14, down from about 50,000 the week before.

"The incidence rate appears to have levelled off in recent weeks," it said in a statement.
