NSW govt boosts palliative care budget

Almost $83 million more will be tipped into palliative care services in NSW in this month's state budget, Treasurer Dominic Perrottet says.

The treasurer on Thursday said the funding would boost hospital-based palliative services in western Sydney including inpatient beds.

It would also include up to 120 additional palliative care workers, increased care to boost patient independence at home and additional carer support.

Some $220 million is already spent each year in NSW on palliative care.

"We know in Australia only a small proportion of people die suddenly. Most people experience a prolonged period of disability, frailty and illness," Mr Perrottet said in a statement.

"This funding will help thousands of families across the state, particularly in regional NSW and western Sydney, to provide dignity to people at the end of life's journey."

The funding also includes $2 million for the under-construction Manly Adolescent and Young Adult Hospice.
