Aboriginal elders from across the Goldfields were recognised during the annual NAIDOC Week Elders Luncheon on Tuesday.

The free event was organised by Bega Garnbirringu Health Service at Kalgoorlie Overland Motel for attendees aged 60 and over.

NAIDOC committee chairperson Raylene Cooper said the annual luncheon was an important event during the NAIDOC Week calendar.

“This day is in appreciation of the pioneers before us, our current and future (elders), it’s a great thing for our elders to be recognised,” she said.

Bega Health Programs co-ordinator Ana King said the health service hosted the luncheon to give back to local Aboriginal elders.

“We love to be able to give back to all the elders because they have the culture, the language, the traditions and the stories,” she said.

“They’ve given so much to the community and we just want to give back to them.”
