Students from St Mary’s Primary School and Boyup Brook High School competed at the Synergy Solar Car Challenge on March 11.

Held in Collie, a single team of Year 8s from Boyup Brook District High School and two teams of Year 6s from St Mary’s travelled to the competition.

There were four members in the District High School team and three in each of St Mary’s teams.

Each team was issued with the same solar car components and design, but teams were able to customise their car by changing the angle of the solar panel and adjusting the gear ratios of the cars.

They had one hour to build the car, before racing against other schools.

St Mary’s student Ruby Bock said she had found it a great learning experience.

“The Solar Car Challenge was a great opportunity for us to learn how to work together as a team to solve a problem and it was really satisfying when our car was racing down the track,” she said.

District High School student Zac Knapp was one of the team members selected to go to Collie and thought the competition was a worthwhile experience.

“It was really good interacting with all your friends and working together,” he said.
